Not every family can take 11 or 12 days off for the full Char Dham circuit. For many pilgrims, the Do Dham Yatra – Kedarnath and Badrinath together – is the perfect way to experience the heart of the Himalayan pilgrimage in about a week. It brings together Lord Shiva as the Jyotirlinga of Kedarnath and Lord Vishnu as Badri Narayan, two of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. At Kashi Travels in Noida, the Kedarnath Badrinath yatra is one of the trips we plan most often, for families, working professionals and senior citizens. This guide shares our tested itinerary, the helicopter option, costs, timing and practical tips.

Why choose the Do Dham Yatra?

  • Shorter duration: About 7–8 days from Noida or Delhi instead of 10–12.
  • The two most revered shrines: Kedarnath and Badrinath draw the largest number of devotees every year.
  • Flexible for seniors: Badrinath is reachable by road, and Kedarnath can be done by helicopter or palki.
  • A good first step: Many families complete the Do Dham Yatra first and return later for Yamunotri and Gangotri.
  • Beautiful route: The drive follows the Ganga, Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers through the Panch Prayag confluences.

The Kedarnath leg: trek, palki or helicopter

Kedarnath is the most demanding part of the Kedarnath Badrinath yatra. From Sonprayag, shuttle vehicles take pilgrims to Gaurikund, where the 16–18 km trek begins. You have four ways to reach the temple:

  1. Walk: Most fit pilgrims take 6–8 hours to climb and 4–6 hours to descend.
  2. Pony or mule: Available at official counters in Gaurikund and Sonprayag.
  3. Palki or pithoo: Carried by porters, good for elderly pilgrims and children.
  4. Helicopter shuttle: From Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi, with tickets only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal.

In 2026 daily helicopter flights were reduced for safety, so book early and keep a road back-up. Read our detailed Kedarnath Yatra guide for trek stages, stays and tips.

The Badrinath leg: the easier shrine

After Kedarnath, the road moves to the Alaknanda valley. There are two ways from Guptkashi to Badrinath:

  • Via Ukhimath, Chopta and Gopeshwar: Scenic, through forests and meadows, joining the Badrinath highway at Chamoli.
  • Via Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag: A wider highway, used when the Chopta road is affected by weather.

Badrinath town is reachable by road, and the temple is a short walk from the parking area. Bathe in the Tapt Kund hot spring before darshan and visit Mana village, Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul nearby. More details are in our Badrinath Yatra guide.

Do Dham Yatra by helicopter

For pilgrims with very little time or mobility, charter operators offer same-day or one-night helicopter packages covering Kedarnath and Badrinath from Dehradun or Phata. These are expensive and weather-dependent, and seats are limited. A more flexible option is a road trip with only the Kedarnath shuttle by helicopter – you save the hardest walk and keep a vehicle with you throughout. Our 4 Dham Yatra by helicopter guide explains how charters and shuttles work.

Registration and documents

Every pilgrim must register on the official Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal and choose Kedarnath and Badrinath with the right dates. Keep ready:

  • Aadhaar or another photo ID for every traveller
  • Registration QR code (phone and printout)
  • Medical certificate if above 55 or with health conditions
  • Hotel confirmations

Our Char Dham Yatra registration guide shows how to register family members step by step.

The spiritual meaning of visiting both shrines

Many devotees believe that visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath together completes a sacred circle – the worship of Shiva, the destroyer of ego, and Vishnu, the preserver of life. There is a popular saying that a pilgrimage to Badrinath is incomplete without first seeking the blessings of Lord Kedarnath. The two temples are also linked through history: both were revived by Adi Shankaracharya, and both are managed by the same temple committee. For families who cannot do the full four-shrine circuit, the Kedarnath Badrinath yatra carries deep spiritual meaning on its own.

Places to see on the way

The road between Rishikesh, Kedarnath and Badrinath passes some of the most beautiful and sacred places in Garhwal. With a little extra time, you can include:

  • Devprayag: The confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi, where the Ganga begins.
  • Dhari Devi temple: Near Srinagar, on the Alaknanda – revered as the guardian goddess of the Char Dham.
  • Rudraprayag: Confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini.
  • Guptkashi: The ancient Vishwanath temple and Ardhanareshwar shrine.
  • Triyuginarayan: Believed to be the wedding place of Shiva and Parvati, a short detour from Sonprayag.
  • Ukhimath: The Omkareshwar temple, winter seat of Lord Kedarnath.
  • Chopta and Tungnath: Meadows and the highest Shiva temple in the world – a lovely add-on for fit travellers.
  • Mana village: The last village before the Tibet border, near Badrinath.

Tell us which places interest your family and we will build them into your Do Dham Yatra without overloading any single day.

Kedarnath Badrinath yatra for senior citizens

Most of our Do Dham groups include parents or grandparents. For them we suggest:

  • An eight-day plan instead of seven, with a rest day after Kedarnath.
  • The Kedarnath helicopter shuttle or a palki instead of walking.
  • An Innova Crysta for better comfort on long hill roads.
  • Hotels close to the temples to keep walking short.
  • A medical check-up before travel; screening is mandatory at designated points in 2026 for pilgrims above 55.

With these steps, a Kedarnath Badrinath yatra is comfortable for most healthy seniors, and many of our elderly guests tell us it was the most memorable journey of their lives.

What to pack for a one-week trip

  • Two sets of warm clothes, thermals, a jacket, cap, gloves and socks.
  • A raincoat or poncho and waterproof bag covers.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and slippers.
  • Personal medicines, ORS, a small first-aid kit and sunscreen.
  • A small backpack for the Kedarnath trek with water, snacks and a torch.
  • Photo ID, registration printout and some cash.

Travel light: a medium bag per person is enough for a Do Dham Yatra, and it makes hotel check-ins and the Kedarnath night stay much easier.

Extending the trip later

If your family enjoys the Do Dham Yatra, it is easy to return for Yamunotri and Gangotri – a 6–7 day trip from Noida via Barkot and Uttarkashi. Some pilgrims prefer to do this in the same season; others come back the next year. Either way, your earlier registration experience and familiarity with the mountains make the second trip smoother. Our Char Dham Yatra package page shows how the full circuit is planned when you are ready to complete all four shrines.

A day-by-day feel of the journey

The first day is easy – a drive to Rishikesh and the evening aarti by the Ganga. The second day is long but beautiful, following the river past Devprayag and Rudraprayag into the Mandakini valley. The third day is the heart of the trip: an early start from Guptkashi, the shuttle to Gaurikund and the long climb to Kedarnath, ending with the evening aarti in front of the temple. After a cold night and a peaceful morning darshan, the fourth day brings you back down. The fifth day crosses the ridge at Chopta to the Alaknanda valley and Badrinath. The last two days are gentle – Mana village, the Panch Prayag and the road home. This rhythm makes the Kedarnath Badrinath yatra both spiritually rich and physically manageable, and it is why so many families choose this plan for their first pilgrimage together.

Choosing the right vehicle

  • Swift Dzire: 2–3 travellers with light luggage.
  • Ertiga: 4–5 travellers.
  • Innova Crysta: The most comfortable for families with seniors.
  • Tempo Traveller: For groups of 9–25; see our tempo traveller on rent in Noida page.

All our vehicles are commercially registered with valid Uttarakhand permits.

What affects the Do Dham Yatra cost?

The cost depends on vehicle, hotel category, number of days, season and add-ons such as pony, palki or helicopter seats. We do not publish fixed prices, because they change with dates and demand – please call or WhatsApp for a quote. Tolls, parking and state tax are charged at actuals.

Tips from our drivers

  • Leave Rishikesh early on Day 2 to reach Guptkashi before dark.
  • Start the Kedarnath trek before 6 am to finish the climb before afternoon weather changes.
  • Stay one night near Kedarnath for a calm morning darshan.
  • Carry a light rain jacket, gloves and a warm cap in your day bag.
  • Drink water regularly and walk slowly at altitude.
  • Keep cash; networks and ATMs are unreliable near the shrines.
  • Save the national emergency number 112, your hotel numbers and our 24x7 office number on every phone.
  • Respect the environment: carry a cloth bag for waste and avoid plastic on the trek.
