Every season, some pilgrims reach the Uttarakhand border or the Kedarnath trek gate only to be stopped because their registration is missing, incomplete or for the wrong date. It is an avoidable problem. The Uttarakhand government made Char Dham Yatra registration compulsory to manage crowds, track pilgrims in emergencies and plan medical and safety services. At Kashi Travels in Noida we help every family we take on the pilgrimage complete this step correctly. This guide explains the process in plain language – online, through the app and offline – along with the documents you need and the mistakes to avoid.
Why is registration compulsory?
Lakhs of pilgrims travel to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath every season, and the shrines are in narrow valleys with limited space. Registration helps the state:
- Control the daily number of pilgrims at each shrine.
- Locate and help pilgrims during landslides, floods or medical emergencies.
- Plan police, medical, parking and hotel capacity.
- Verify pilgrims at check posts and before darshan.
In 2026 the QR code is checked at multiple points, including barriers on the highway, trek gates and temple queues. Without valid Char Dham registration, you may be asked to go back or wait until you register for an available date.
Who needs to register?
Everyone. This includes:
- Pilgrims travelling by car, taxi, tempo traveller or bus.
- Helicopter passengers – IRCTC asks for the registration number when you book Kedarnath shuttle tickets.
- Senior citizens and children (children are added with a guardian's details).
- NRI and foreign pilgrims (using passport details).
- Pilgrims visiting only one shrine, such as only Badrinath or only Kedarnath.
Char Dham Yatra registration online: step by step
The official portal is the Tourist Care Uttarakhand website. The process takes 10–15 minutes for a family.
Step 1 – Create an account. Open the portal and choose the option to register or log in as a pilgrim. Enter your name, mobile number and email, and verify with OTP. One mobile number can be used to register a family or group.
Step 2 – Add tour details. Choose "Char Dham" (or the specific Dham you plan to visit), the tour type (individual or group), and your expected dates for each shrine. Enter the number of travellers.
Step 3 – Add each traveller. For every person, enter full name, age, gender, ID type and number (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence), and upload a recent photo. Double-check spellings – they should match the ID exactly.
Step 4 – Add vehicle details. If you are travelling by road, add the vehicle number and driver details. If you have hired a taxi from Kashi Travels, we share these details with you before the trip.
Step 5 – Submit and download. Submit the form and download the registration letter with the QR code. Save it on your phone and keep printed copies for every traveller.
That completes your Char Dham Yatra registration. If the system shows that your preferred date is full at a particular shrine, choose the next available date and adjust your itinerary. Our Char Dham Yatra route guide helps you rearrange days if needed.
Registration through the mobile app
The state tourism department also offers a mobile app (Tourist Care Uttarakhand) for Android and iPhone. The steps are the same as on the portal – account, tour details, travellers, vehicle and download. The app is convenient because the QR code is always available on your phone, but mobile networks are weak in parts of the mountains, so download the letter and keep a printout too.
Offline Char Dham registration counters
If you cannot register online, offline counters are set up during the season at important points on the route, such as Haridwar and Rishikesh, and at a few locations closer to the shrines. However:
- Queues can be very long in May and June.
- Daily limits apply, so offline slots may be full for your preferred date.
- You will need original ID cards and photos for every traveller.
We strongly advise online Char Dham registration at least two to three weeks before travel.
Documents you need
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar / passport / voter ID / driving licence | Identity of each traveller |
| Recent photograph (digital) | Uploaded during registration |
| Mobile number | OTP and updates |
| Vehicle number and driver details | For road travel |
| Registration letter with QR code | Checked at barriers, trek gates and temples |
| Medical certificate (if applicable) | For pilgrims above 55 or with health conditions |
When should you register?
Timing matters. The portal opens registrations before the season begins, and popular dates in May and June fill up quickly. Our advice for Char Dham Yatra registration is simple:
- Register as soon as your dates are final – ideally four to six weeks before travel for peak months.
- Register before booking hotels and helicopters, because both may ask for your registration number.
- For September–October trips, two to three weeks in advance is usually enough.
- Do not wait to register at offline counters unless you have no other option.
Choosing good dates also depends on the weather. Our best time for Char Dham Yatra guide helps you decide before you register.
Char Dham registration for senior citizens
Elderly pilgrims need a little extra preparation. When you complete Char Dham registration for parents or grandparents:
- Enter their age correctly – it helps the medical teams on the route.
- Carry a medical fitness certificate from their doctor, especially if they are above 55.
- Keep a list of their medicines and conditions with the registration printout.
- Mention a family member's number as the emergency contact.
Health screening points on the route may advise some pilgrims not to continue to higher shrines if their health is at risk. Please take this advice seriously – it exists to protect lives.
Registration for NRI and foreign pilgrims
Pilgrims living abroad can complete Char Dham Yatra registration online before arriving in India. Use your passport as the ID proof and an Indian or international mobile number that can receive OTP. Keep printed copies, because roaming networks may not work in the mountains. Foreign nationals should also carry their visa and passport at all times during the trip.
Registering for a single shrine
Many pilgrims visit only one or two shrines – for example a Kedarnath Yatra alone, or Kedarnath and Badrinath together. In that case, select only the shrines you plan to visit and give dates for them. The same rules apply: every traveller must be listed, and the QR code will be checked at the trek gate and temple. If you later decide to add another shrine, update your Char Dham registration or register again for the extra shrine before travelling there.
How registration fits into your trip plan
We usually plan the trip in this order for our guests:
- Fix travel dates and itinerary.
- Complete Char Dham registration for every traveller.
- Book hotels and, if needed, Kedarnath helicopter seats.
- Confirm the vehicle and driver.
- Carry printouts and documents on the day of departure.
Following this sequence avoids the common problem of hotels booked for dates on which the shrine quota is already full. For the complete picture, read our main Char Dham Yatra guide.
Final checklist before you leave home
Before your vehicle leaves Noida or Delhi, check that your Char Dham Yatra registration covers every traveller, every shrine and the right dates. Make sure the QR code opens on at least two phones in the group and that each person has a printed copy in their bag. Confirm that the vehicle number on the Char Dham registration matches the vehicle you are travelling in. A five-minute check at home can save hours at a barrier. If anything looks wrong, correct your Char Dham Yatra registration on the portal before you start.
Where is the QR code checked?
During your trip, expect verification at:
- Police check posts on the highways entering the Char Dham zone.
- Trek gates at Janki Chatti (Yamunotri) and Sonprayag/Gaurikund (Kedarnath).
- Temple queue entry points, especially at Kedarnath and Badrinath.
- Helipads, where helicopter operators verify your registration.
Keep the QR code ready on your phone and in print. Our drivers usually remind groups before each check post.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Registering with wrong dates. Plan your itinerary first, then register with realistic dates for each shrine.
- Spelling mismatch with ID. Names should match your photo ID exactly.
- Forgetting some family members. Every person, including children, must be listed.
- Paying an agent. Registration is free; do not pay anyone for it.
- Using fake websites. Use only the official government portal and app.
- Not carrying a printout. Phone batteries die and networks fail in the hills.
Can I change dates after registration?
Plans change because of weather, health or road closures. Log in to your account on the portal and check if the modify option is available for your registration. If not, you may need to register again for new dates. Keep your previous registration letter until the new one is confirmed. If you are travelling with Kashi Travels, our team helps you rearrange hotels and the vehicle schedule accordingly.
Registration for groups and societies
For group pilgrimages, one coordinator can register all members under a group tour using one mobile number. Collect ID copies and photos from everyone in advance, fill the form carefully and share the final PDF with all members. For large groups travelling in a tempo traveller, add the vehicle and driver details at the end. See our tempo traveller on rent in Noida page for group vehicle options.
Helicopter bookings and registration
If you plan to fly to Kedarnath, complete your Char Dham Yatra registration first. The official IRCTC HeliYatra portal asks for your registration number when you book shuttle seats from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi. Book early, because daily flights were reduced in 2026 for safety. Read more in our 4 Dham Yatra by helicopter guide.
Health screening and other 2026 rules
- Pilgrims above 55 or with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or breathing problems should carry a medical certificate; health screening is mandatory at designated points.
- Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temple premises.
- Darshan tokens and time slots are used at busy shrines.
- Follow instructions from police and temple staff at all times.
For temple updates and puja bookings, visit the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee website.
