Choosing the right month is the single biggest decision in planning a pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The same trip can feel peaceful in late September and exhausting in a crowded, rainy week in July. At Kashi Travels in Noida we plan road trips on this route every season, and this page brings together what our drivers and guests experience month by month – temperatures, crowds, road conditions and the practical side of the best time for Char Dham Yatra.

2026 opening and closing dates
The season depends on when the temples open and close:
| Shrine | Opened in 2026 | Expected closing |
|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 19 April | Around 11 November |
| Gangotri | 19 April | Around 10 November |
| Kedarnath | 22 April | Around 11 November |
| Badrinath | 23 April | Around 13 November |
Closing dates are announced on Vijayadashami each year. Confirm the latest schedule with the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee before booking.
April–May: the opening weeks
The yatra begins with great excitement. The first few days after the portals open draw huge crowds, especially at Kedarnath. Snow may still lie along the Kedarnath trek and at Badrinath, and nights drop close to freezing.
Char Dham weather in April–May (approx.):
| Shrine | Day temperature | Night temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 10–18°C | 2–6°C |
| Gangotri | 10–18°C | 2–6°C |
| Kedarnath | 5–15°C | -2–4°C |
| Badrinath | 8–17°C | 0–5°C |
Why go: Snow-capped views, festive atmosphere, long daylight. Watch out for: Long queues, hotel shortages and very cold nights. Book hotels 6–8 weeks in advance.
June: the most popular month
The first half of June is warm and comfortable, which is why families with school holidays prefer it. Pre-monsoon showers usually arrive in the second half of June, and road delays begin.
Char Dham weather in June: Days of about 12–22°C and nights of 5–10°C at most shrines, a little colder at Kedarnath. Afternoon clouds and rain are common after mid-June.
Our advice: If June is your only option, choose the first two weeks and start every day early so you finish driving before afternoon rain.
July–August: the monsoon months
The monsoon is the riskiest period of the year. Heavy rain triggers landslides on the Rishikesh–Badrinath, Rudraprayag–Gaurikund and Uttarkashi–Gangotri roads, and helicopter services are often suspended. Rivers run high, and the Kedarnath and Yamunotri paths become slippery.
We do not recommend the monsoon for families with seniors or children. If you must travel:
- Keep at least two buffer days.
- Follow the IMD weather warnings and state advisories every day.
- Never cross flooded streams or stop under loose slopes.
- Travel only with an experienced hill driver.
The upside is fewer pilgrims, green valleys and lower hotel demand, but safety comes first.
September–October: the traveller's favourite
Once the monsoon withdraws in mid-September, the hills are washed clean. Skies are clear, peaks are visible from almost everywhere and the crowds are much smaller than in May. Many experienced pilgrims consider this the best time for Char Dham Yatra.
Char Dham weather in September–October (approx.):
| Shrine | Day temperature | Night temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 8–16°C | 0–5°C |
| Gangotri | 8–16°C | 0–5°C |
| Kedarnath | 5–12°C | -3–3°C |
| Badrinath | 6–14°C | -2–4°C |
By late October nights at Kedarnath and Badrinath fall below freezing. Pack heavy woollens, gloves, a good jacket and warm socks, and keep a thermos of hot water for early morning starts.
November: closing weeks
The temples close in the first half of November. The weather is very cold, snowfall is possible and many hotels close early. The closing ceremonies are spiritually special, but this period suits only well-prepared, healthy travellers.
Best time for Char Dham Yatra for senior citizens
For elderly parents, comfort and safety matter more than scenery. We suggest:
- First choice: Mid-May to mid-June – warmer nights and good road conditions.
- Second choice: The last two weeks of September – mild days and fewer crowds.
- Avoid: The opening week (very crowded), the monsoon and late October onwards (too cold).
Choose a comfortable SUV, add rest days and consider a Kedarnath helicopter shuttle. Read our 4 Dham Yatra by helicopter guide for flying options.
Best time for a helicopter yatra
Helicopters need clear skies and low winds. The most reliable months are May, early June and October. Morning flights are safer; clouds usually build after noon. During the monsoon, flights are frequently cancelled. Always keep a road back-up – our Char Dham taxi service can arrange a standby vehicle.
How Char Dham weather affects each part of the trip
| Part of trip | Good-weather months | Weather risk |
|---|---|---|
| Rishikesh–Badrinath highway | May–June, Sept–Oct | Landslides near Tota Ghati, Chamoli and Pipalkoti in rain |
| Uttarkashi–Gangotri road | May–June, Sept–Oct | Rockfall in monsoon |
| Gaurikund–Kedarnath trek | May–June, Sept–Oct | Snow in April, slippery path in rain |
| Janki Chatti–Yamunotri trek | May–June, Sept–Oct | Slippery in rain |
| Helicopter sectors | May, early June, October | Clouds, fog, wind |
What to pack in each season
April–May: Heavy jacket, thermals, woollen cap, gloves, rain jacket, sunglasses. June: Light woollens, rain jacket, umbrella, quick-dry clothes. September–October: Heavy woollens, thermals, gloves, warm socks, moisturiser and lip balm. Always: Personal medicines, ORS, a torch, power bank and good walking shoes.
Crowd tips for peak season
- Travel mid-week instead of weekends.
- Reach Kedarnath and Badrinath early morning or late evening for shorter queues.
- Register early on the Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal, because daily slots fill up fast.
- Book hotels near the temples for the nights you plan to do darshan.
Our step-by-step Char Dham Yatra registration guide helps you finish this in minutes.
Special days and festivals during the season
Some dates carry extra spiritual meaning, and many devotees plan their trip around them. They are also the busiest days, so book early if you want to be there:
- Akshaya Tritiya (April/May): The portals of Yamunotri and Gangotri open on this day. The opening ceremony, with the doli of the goddess arriving from her winter seat, is a moving experience.
- Kedarnath opening day: The Panchmukhi doli of Lord Kedarnath travels from Ukhimath to the temple over several days, accompanied by thousands of devotees.
- Badri-Kedar Utsav and Shravan month: Shravan (July–August) is sacred to Lord Shiva, but it falls in the monsoon, so Kedarnath visits in this month need very careful planning.
- Navratri and Vijayadashami (September/October): Pleasant weather and a festive mood; closing dates are announced on Vijayadashami.
- Diwali and Bhai Dooj (October/November): Kedarnath and Yamunotri usually close around Bhai Dooj, and Gangotri closes around Govardhan Puja.
If you prefer peace over festivities, avoid these days and choose ordinary weekdays in late May or late September.
Budget and bookings: how the season affects your costs
The month you choose also shapes your budget. In May and early June, hotel demand near every shrine is at its peak, rooms sell out and prices are higher. Vehicles are also in heavy demand, so you should confirm your cab or tempo traveller at least a month in advance. In late September and October, hotels are easier to get and you have more choice of rooms close to the temples.
Monsoon months may look cheaper, but hidden costs appear when roads close – extra hotel nights, extra driver days and changed plans. For most families, the safest months are also the best value once these risks are counted. Our Char Dham Yatra cost guide explains the main cost heads in detail.
How we plan around the weather
After many seasons on this route, our team follows a simple weather routine for every group:
- Before booking: We check the season calendar, temple dates and historical rain patterns for your chosen week.
- One week before: We review IMD forecasts and state advisories and suggest changes if heavy rain is expected.
- Every morning of the trip: The driver checks road status with local police, other drivers and hotel staff before starting.
- During the day: We aim to finish driving by mid-afternoon, when clouds and rain usually build up in the hills.
- Buffer day: For trips in June and September we keep one spare day in the plan, so a road closure does not cancel darshan.
This routine is the reason many families from Noida and Delhi trust us with their parents' pilgrimage. The mountains decide the pace; our job is to keep you safe and on schedule wherever possible.
Kedarnath and Badrinath: extra notes on Char Dham weather
Kedarnath sits higher than the other three shrines and has the harshest Char Dham weather. Snow can remain on parts of the trek until early May, and temperatures near the temple fall below zero on many nights. Rain makes the 16–18 km path slippery, and fog can stop helicopter shuttles for hours. Carry a waterproof jacket, gloves and a spare pair of socks in your day bag.
Badrinath is milder but windier, and the Alaknanda valley can get very cold after sunset. The highway to Badrinath has a few known landslide zones, so plan to cross them in the morning. In both places the sun is strong at midday – sunglasses and sunscreen are as important as warm clothes.
Tips from travellers who went with us
Guests who travelled with us often share the same lessons. One family that did Kedarnath and Badrinath with our driver wrote that his knowledge of "the routes and timings" made the trip easy. Others tell us they wish they had carried more woollens in October, or started earlier in June. We pass on this advice to every new group, because real experience on the road is the best guide to the best time for Char Dham Yatra.
