The Chardham Yatra 2026 has been one of the busiest seasons in recent years, with new rules, tighter safety measures and changes in helicopter operations. As of the end of September, the monsoon has withdrawn and the post-monsoon window – many pilgrims' favourite time – is open until the temples close in November. At Kashi Travels in Noida we track these updates for every group we plan, and this page brings them together: dates, rules, helicopter changes, safety facilities and a practical plan for the remaining weeks of the season.
Chardham Yatra 2026: opening and closing dates
| Shrine | Opening date | Expected closing date |
|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 19 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya) | Around 11 November 2026 |
| Gangotri | 19 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya) | Around 10 November 2026 |
| Kedarnath | 22 April 2026 | Around 11 November 2026 |
| Badrinath | 23 April 2026 | Around 13 November 2026 |
Closing dates are formally announced on Vijayadashami, based on the Hindu calendar, and are usually linked to festivals such as Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Always check the final schedule on the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee website before booking your trip.
What is new in the Chardham Yatra 2026?
The state government and temple committees introduced or tightened several rules this season:
- Compulsory registration with QR checks. Every pilgrim must register on the official portal. QR codes are checked at highway barriers, trek gates and temple queues.
- No phones or cameras inside temple premises. Devotees must keep phones and cameras outside and follow deposit instructions at each shrine.
- Mandatory health screening. Pilgrims above 55, and those with heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure, are screened at designated points.
- Reduced helicopter frequency. After accidents in 2025, the DGCA ordered a reduction in daily shuttle flights, and temporary air traffic control facilities were set up at Kedarnath and Badrinath.
- Darshan tokens and slots. Time-slot systems help manage crowds at the busiest shrines.
- Stronger emergency support. More ambulances, medical posts and a helicopter ambulance service have been deployed along the route, along with real-time pilgrim tracking.
These changes make the Chardham Yatra 2026 safer, but they also mean more planning. Families who register early and carry documents in order face far fewer delays.
Registration for the Chardham Yatra 2026
Register on the official Tourist Care Uttarakhand portal or the mobile app. The process is free and takes about 10–15 minutes for a family:
- Create an account with your mobile number.
- Add every traveller with a photo ID and photograph.
- Select dates for each shrine.
- Add vehicle details if travelling by road.
- Download the QR code letter and keep printouts.
Our step-by-step Char Dham Yatra registration guide explains common mistakes and how to register groups.
Helicopter services in 2026
Kedarnath helicopter shuttles operate from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi, with tickets sold only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal. For the Chardham Yatra 2026, booking opened in April and services began soon after the Kedarnath portals opened. Key points:
- Daily flights are fewer than in earlier years because of the DGCA's safety order.
- Seats sell out quickly for peak weeks; book as soon as the window opens for your dates.
- Services are suspended during the monsoon and resume after safety approval.
- Weather can cancel flights at short notice – always keep a road back-up.
Aviation safety notices are published by the DGCA. For charter circuits covering all four shrines, read our 4 Dham Yatra by helicopter guide.
Is October 2026 a good time to go?
Yes – for well-prepared travellers, October is one of the best months of the season. After the monsoon, skies are clear, peaks are visible and crowds are smaller than in May and June. What to expect in the last weeks of the Chardham Yatra 2026:
| Factor | October | Early November |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Clear, sunny days, cold nights | Very cold, snow possible |
| Crowds | Moderate | Low, except closing days |
| Roads | Mostly good after monsoon repairs | Good until closing |
| Hotels | Easier to book | Some close early |
| Best for | Families, photographers | Experienced, well-prepared pilgrims |
Carry heavy woollens: night temperatures at Kedarnath and Badrinath fall below freezing in late October. Our best time for Char Dham Yatra guide has month-wise details.

Safety facilities on the route in 2026
The state administration has deployed a large network of medical and emergency services for the season, including more than 170 ambulances, medical relief posts on the treks, and a helicopter ambulance service for critical cases in coordination with AIIMS Rishikesh. Police help desks, lost-and-found counters and real-time crowd monitoring are also in place. Save the national emergency number 112 on every phone, along with the numbers of your hotel at each stop, your driver and our 24x7 office line. If a member of your group feels unwell at altitude, inform the nearest medical post immediately and do not continue climbing until a doctor has checked them.
Health tips for the 2026 season
- Get a check-up before you travel, especially if you are above 55.
- Carry your medical certificate and medicine list with your registration papers.
- Walk slowly at high altitude and rest if you feel breathless or dizzy.
- Keep warm – hypothermia is a real risk in late October and November.
- Drink water regularly and avoid alcohol and smoking.
What happens at the closing ceremonies?
The closing of the portals is one of the most beautiful moments of the pilgrim calendar. On the chosen day, after the final puja, the priests carry the deity's utsav murti in a decorated doli to the winter seat, accompanied by devotees, army band music at some shrines and chants of "Jai Badri Vishal" or "Har Har Mahadev". At Kedarnath, the Panchmukhi doli travels over several days to the Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath. At Badrinath, the Akhand Jyoti is lit and the temple is closed for winter with elaborate rituals.
If you plan to witness the closing of the Chardham Yatra 2026, remember:
- Crowds are very large on closing days, and hotels fill up early.
- The weather is harsh – snow and sub-zero temperatures are common.
- Roads can be closed briefly for the doli procession.
- Senior citizens should think carefully before travelling at this time.
Winter pilgrimage after the temples close
When the main temples close, darshan continues at the winter seats – Kharsali for Yamunotri, Mukhba for Gangotri, Ukhimath for Kedarnath, and Pandukeshwar and Joshimath for Badrinath. The Uttarakhand government has been promoting this winter char dham yatra so that devotees can visit even in the cold months. These places are easier to reach by road and have fewer crowds. If you miss the Chardham Yatra 2026 season, a winter visit to the seats is a meaningful alternative. Tell us if you would like a winter plan, and we will suggest the right route and hotels.
Budget tips for the rest of the season
The post-monsoon weeks usually offer better hotel availability than May and June. To keep your costs sensible:
- Travel mid-week and avoid the closing days if you want quieter hotels.
- Share a tempo traveller if you are a group of nine or more.
- Book hotels close to the temples only for the nights you need them.
- Keep one buffer day instead of paying for last-minute changes later.

A well-prepared char dham yatra in autumn is one of the most rewarding journeys you can make – clear views, peaceful darshan and crisp mountain air.
Lessons for pilgrims from this season
Every season teaches something. This year the clearest lessons have been simple: families who registered early, kept buffer days and travelled with experienced drivers faced far fewer problems than those who planned at the last minute. Helicopter seats were harder to get because of reduced flights, so the hybrid plan – road travel with a booked shuttle slot and a back-up plan – worked best for seniors. And the new rule on phones inside temples, while inconvenient for some, has made darshan calmer. Keep these lessons in mind for the rest of the Chardham Yatra 2026 and for next year's char dham yatra too.
Travelling from Noida and Delhi this autumn
Delhi-NCR is pleasant in October, so the drive to Haridwar is comfortable, and the Delhi–Meerut Expressway and the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway have shortened the first leg for many families. Start before 6 am to avoid city traffic and festival rush around Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali. If your dates overlap with Diwali, expect heavier traffic on highways out of NCR and book vehicles early. Our drivers plan the first night in Haridwar or Rishikesh so that everyone is fresh before entering the mountains. For groups, we recommend confirming vehicles at least three weeks ahead during the festive period, because demand for outstation cabs rises sharply at this time of year in the Chardham Yatra 2026 season.
