Uttarakhand is called Devbhoomi, the land of the gods, and one road trip is enough to understand why. Within a few hundred kilometres of Delhi-NCR you move from the Ganga plains to pine forests, from roaring rivers to silent glaciers, and from busy ghats to villages where time still moves slowly. At Kashi Travels we drive families from Noida and Delhi into these hills every week – for pilgrimages, weekend breaks and long holidays. This guide collects the places our guests love most and the practical tips our drivers share, so you can plan your own journey into the beauty of Uttarakhand.

What makes the beauty of Uttarakhand so special?

Few states in India pack so much into such a small area. The state is divided into two regions – Garhwal in the west and Kumaon in the east – and each has its own landscape, food and culture. Here is what defines the beauty of Uttarakhand:

  • The Himalaya: Peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and Panchachuli dominate the northern skyline.
  • Holy rivers: The Ganga, Yamuna, Alaknanda, Bhagirathi and Mandakini are born here, and their confluences – the Panch Prayag – are sacred.
  • Lakes: Naini Lake, Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal and the vast Tehri reservoir.
  • Meadows and valleys: Bugyals like Auli, Dayara and Chopta, and the UNESCO-listed Valley of Flowers.
  • Forests and wildlife: Sal and pine forests, and Jim Corbett, India's oldest national park.
  • Culture and faith: The Char Dham temples, Panch Kedar, Jageshwar, and countless village shrines.

These Uttarakhand places suit different kinds of travellers. Families with young children enjoy Mussoorie and Nainital; couples often prefer Lansdowne, Kausani and Chakrata; adventure lovers head to Rishikesh, Auli and Chopta; and pilgrims follow the Char Dham route.

The Garhwal side: rivers, shrines and high meadows

Garhwal is the land of the Char Dham and the source of the Ganga and Yamuna. A drive from Rishikesh to Badrinath follows the Alaknanda through Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag, and every turn reveals a new valley. The beauty of Uttarakhand in Garhwal is dramatic – steep gorges, snow peaks and temples perched on ridges.

Highlights our drivers recommend:

  • Sunrise at Chandrashila above Tungnath, with Chaukhamba and Nanda Devi glowing pink.
  • The confluence at Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda become the Ganga.
  • The Harsil valley in October, when apples are harvested and the poplars turn gold.
  • Auli in winter for skiing, and in summer for walks in green meadows.

Pilgrims can read our Char Dham Yatra guide and our Kedarnath Yatra page to combine faith with sightseeing.

The Kumaon side: lakes, orchards and colonial towns

Kumaon is gentler and greener. Its hill towns were popular with British officers, and many still have old churches, cottages and long walking trails. Lakes, fruit orchards and wide Himalayan views define the beauty of Uttarakhand in Kumaon.

  • Nainital and the lake district: Naini Lake, Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal are close to each other and perfect for a 3–4 day trip.
  • Kausani: Mahatma Gandhi called it the Switzerland of India for its sweeping view of Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli.
  • Mukteshwar: Orchards, a 350-year-old Shiva temple and cliff-side views.
  • Munsiyari: A remote village facing the Panchachuli peaks, best for travellers who enjoy long drives.
  • Jageshwar: A cluster of more than 100 ancient stone temples in a deodar forest.

Wildlife and forests

Jim Corbett National Park, established in 1936, is India's oldest national park and one of the best places to see a tiger in the wild. Safari zones such as Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhikala and Dhela are booked through the official Corbett Tiger Reserve portal. Rajaji National Park near Haridwar is another good option for a short wildlife trip. Beyond the parks, the pine, oak, rhododendron and deodar forests themselves are a big part of the beauty of Uttarakhand – especially in March and April when rhododendrons bloom red across Kumaon and Garhwal.

Best season to see the beauty of Uttarakhand

Every season shows a different face of the hills:

Season Months What you see Best Uttarakhand places
Spring March–April Rhododendron blooms, pleasant days Kausani, Mukteshwar, Chopta
Summer May–June Escape from Delhi heat, Char Dham open Mussoorie, Nainital, Char Dham
Monsoon July–August Green valleys, waterfalls, flowers Valley of Flowers (with caution)
Autumn September–November Clear skies, best mountain views Auli, Chopta, Harsil, Munsiyari
Winter December–February Snowfall, skiing, quiet towns Auli, Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Nainital

Monsoon travel needs care because of landslides. Check the IMD weather forecast and state advisories before you leave. For pilgrim-specific advice, see our best time for Char Dham Yatra guide.

Sample road trips from Noida

Here are three plans that show the beauty of Uttarakhand without rushing:

1. Weekend in the hills (2–3 days): Noida → Lansdowne or Mussoorie → Noida. Ideal for couples and small families. Our weekend getaways from Noida by taxi article lists more options.

2. Kumaon lakes and views (5–6 days): Noida → Nainital (2 nights) → Kausani (2 nights) → Jim Corbett (1 night) → Noida.

3. Garhwal grand circuit (7–8 days): Noida → Rishikesh → Rudraprayag → Chopta (Tungnath) → Auli / Joshimath → Badrinath and Mana → Rishikesh → Noida.

All three trips work well in a private cab, and for groups we recommend a tempo traveller on rent in Noida.

Hidden Uttarakhand places most tourists miss

The famous hill stations get crowded on long weekends. If you want quieter Uttarakhand places, our drivers often suggest these:

  • Khirsu: A tiny village near Pauri with oak forests and wide views of the Garhwal peaks.
  • Chaukori: Tea gardens and sunrise views over the Panchachuli range in Kumaon.
  • Kanatal: A calm stop between Mussoorie and Tehri, popular for camping.
  • Lohaghat and Abbott Mount: Old cottages, deodar forests and almost no crowds.
  • Dhanaulti: Close to Mussoorie but far quieter, with eco-parks and snow in winter.
  • Pangot: A bird-watcher's paradise just outside Nainital.

These lesser-known Uttarakhand places have fewer hotels, so plan stays in advance, and expect narrow roads in some stretches. A small car or SUV handles them better than a large bus.

The best photography spots

For photographers, the beauty of Uttarakhand changes with every hour of light. A few spots that never disappoint: sunrise at Chandrashila and Kausani, the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh, the view of Nanda Devi from Auli, the Bhagirathi valley at Harsil in autumn, and the reflection of the peaks in Deoria Tal near Sari village. Carry a spare battery – cold mornings drain batteries quickly.

How to reach Uttarakhand from Noida and Delhi

Most Uttarakhand places are reached by road. The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway has cut travel time to Dehradun and Mussoorie, while the Delhi–Meerut Expressway and NH-334 lead to Haridwar and Rishikesh. For Kumaon, the route goes through Moradabad, Rampur and Haldwani. Trains run to Haridwar, Dehradun and Kathgodam, and flights land at Dehradun (Jolly Grant) and Pantnagar, but you still need a cab for the hills. A private taxi from your doorstep in Noida is usually the most comfortable choice for families.

Food and culture you should experience

The beauty of Uttarakhand is not only in its views. Local food and customs make the trip memorable:

  • Garhwali and Kumaoni food: Kafuli (green leafy curry), aloo ke gutke, bhatt ki churkani, mandua roti, jhangora kheer and bal mithai from Almora.
  • Festivals: Nanda Devi Raj Jat, Uttarayani Mela, Harela and Phool Dei celebrate nature and the seasons.
  • Handicrafts: Aipan art, woollen shawls from Munsiyari and ringaal bamboo craft.
  • Hospitality: Many villages now run homestays where you can eat with local families.

The state tourism board publishes festival calendars and homestay details on the Uttarakhand Tourism website.

How to travel safely in the hills

Mountain roads are beautiful but demand respect. Our drivers follow these rules on every trip, and we recommend them to all travellers:

  • Start early and avoid driving after dark on hill roads.
  • Do not stop under loose slopes or near river banks during rain.
  • Keep motion-sickness tablets, water and light snacks in the car.
  • Carry warm layers even in summer – temperatures drop fast after sunset.
  • Follow police diversions and check road status during the monsoon.
  • Hire a commercially registered vehicle with an experienced hill driver.

Travelling responsibly

Uttarakhand's ecosystem is fragile. Please carry your own water bottle, avoid single-use plastic, stay on marked trails, and do not play loud music in forests and at temples. Respecting local customs and the environment keeps the beauty of Uttarakhand alive for the next generation of travellers.
